Bread and Butter Bake

Butter the bread and arrange them (standing on a lean - not lying down) in a large oven dish. The pieces should overlap.

Fry the onion and garlic in a pan, then put it into a dish. Chuck the bacon into the pan and cook that till it's just done. Combine the milk and eggs and season.

Now - sprinkle the bacon, onion and garlic, parsley and 3/4 of the cheese over and between the bread. Then pour the egg and milk mxture all over it and let it soak in. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top.

Cover it and put it in the fridge for at least 1 hour. When you're ready, get the oven up to 180C and bake for about 40 - 45 mins.

Bread and Butter Bake - what do you reckon?

  • This is great for kids, and is really forgiving of any variation of quantities or toppings. Very happy I found and tried this one, tasty and useful. Thanks.

  • I agree with patrick, what do you mean stand them on a lean?

    - Hi Sheree. Instead of lying them down flat, stand the bread up on it's edge, then lean it over slightly so it's resting on the side of the dish. Then lean the next one on that and so on. Cheers, The Blokes.

  • Hey, What with the bread instruction? Slice it first? Split it in half?
